How To Handle Performance Anxiety

performance anxietyAthletes and Professionals who consistently perform well have found ways to turn nervous energy into a powerful source of inner strength and confidence. They have learned how to shift from a worried mind to an attitude of sharpened confidence and focus, both in sport and other aspects of their lives.

Research from top athletes shows that virtually all performers experience high levels of pre-competitive anxiety. Most athletes can direct their focus and energy on the task at hand. They learn how to say to themselves, Im nervous, and this is the way I feel before every great performance.

So how can you develop the ability to fine- tune your energy level to achieve  your ideal performance state? How can you turn your excitement into a powerful and positive energy source that will maximize your talent and skill? Here are some simple tools to help you remain cool and focused during competition: breathe deeply, with each inhale say, Im breathing in strength, with each exhale say, Im breathing out tension. Accept nervousness as your friend, it’s a good sign that you are ready to go. It’s important to be able to distinguish the feeling of being worried , and being psyched and ready for the challenge. Remind yourself that you are well prepared, well-trained, rested, and ready to do your best. Mentally rehearse your event and go over in your mind exactly how you want it to go. You are off to a great start! go for it!
